New National Minimum Wage

Requirements applicable from April 2018

As you may already be aware that every April new hourly rates are applicable for the National Living Wage, applicable to persons aged 25 and above and the National Minimum Wage, applicable to persons to school leaving age.

Following are the detail of the changes to the National Minimum Wage from April 2018 with comparison to last year rates (April 2017):

Apprentices are entitled to an apprentice rate if they’re either aged under 19 or are aged 19 or over but are in the first year of their apprenticeship. In such cases they are entitled in the first year of their apprenticeship, they will be entitled to a minimum hourly rate of £3.70. They would however be entitled to a minimum hourly wage of £7.38 for their age if they both are aged 19 or over and have completed the first year of their apprenticeship

Accordingly, to avoid penalties and adverse publicity, all employers need to make sure that their business implements the new National Minimum Wage changes applicable from the month of April 2018 onwards as far as the payment to their employees is concerned.
